A rainy Sunday afternoon in Rennes and not the greatest weather for a soccer game but I'll take it. After jumping off of a very full bus we grabbed snacks before the game. Not quite the obligatory hot dog but pretty close, galette saucisse which is a sausage wrapped in a salty crepe. They had ketchup though so I was happy. Inside the stadium we had to go through a pat down process more rigorous than the one at Boston Logan Airport. The stadium is pretty big and holds around 31,000 people. It was pretty full considering it was not a huge rivalry game and it was gross out. Lots of the same traditions as in the states even the weird mascot (an ermine) and the loud announcer no one can understand. Warm ups were done to horrible loud american pop music ( I could really have been at Fenway) and of course the strange mascot led us in a terrible rendition of we will rock you. (The french people didn't know the words and the mascot was off beat for all of the clapping) even here you cannot escape the obligatory we will rock you, who would have guessed. Rennes v. Nice was a good game, started off a little slow and there should have been a penalty kick for a major foul in the penalty box when Rennes had a clear shot. We entered into half time with a 0-0 score and started half time with a very strange competition where two teams of local players tried to score on each other while the mascot attacked them. Rennes scored right away in the second half with a beautiful cross to center and then again off of a penalty kick. After the first goal the other side of the stadium decided to set off some flares which was very exciting. There were no waves but I am hoping as it gets warmer and more people come we will see some of those. Final score 2-0 Rennes. Hopefully we will continue to do well and then we will be able to follow them through the playoffs.
